Outlander: Sassenach

I had originally planned to read the book the TV show is based on, but considering my impossibly busy agenda this holiday, I don't think I could fit in large, historical, fantasy books in there. Plus, I have Heir of Fire to read yet and I'm both anxious and excited to read it. More anxious though. But, for Outlander instead of reading the books, I thought I'd just treat myself by watching the whole thing.

World War II combat nurse Claire Randall is transported back to 1743 Scotland, where she is kidnapped by Highlanders and meets an injured man named Jamie.

A great little overview for the first episode. In all honesty, the first half of it was rather boring. It showed Claire in her post-war state, reunited with her husband after spending five years apart. They travel to Scotland for a second honeymoon and after all that time, they of course made their bed very bouncy and squeaky (wink, wink) - they jumped on it like a couple of kids. But eventually shit did go down, and we witnessed the christening of their bed. Claire's husband was trying to dicover an ancestor of his, but somehow they ended up tangled up together again. But hear's something eerie. Some guy was standing in the Scoland street as it was pouring down with rain and he was watching Claire brush her hair through the window. Her husband saw this guy and approached him. The guy turned away and vanished into thin air. Spooky. Claire and her husband witnessed some witch ceremony where they made the sun rise very promptly. I have to say, their reactions were unrealistic. I was there like wtf, and they were there like it was something normal that happened. Who else makes the sun rise so quickly? Sorcerers! Later, Claire becomes intrigued by some type of flower that was around the place the witches were dancing. She picks from the blossom and suddenly she went back in time. She encounters shots from English (Red coat) guns and she's suddenly back into another battle. She must be sick of seeing blood, but oh was she about to see more. She was noticed by a red coat who looked ridiculously like her husband, and he almost raped her. Until she got saved by some guy, who dragged her back to a small, isolated shelter. Inside were a group of men, and they were all Scots. They tried to fix one of their men's arm, but Claire, being a nurse, cringed at their ignorance. Since 1743, methods had changed for Claire, and in Science there was simple methods to deal with medical issues. Claire fixed the fellow's arm and we got a shot of his face. And my oh my was he very handsome indeed. His name is Jamie and let the attractiveness unfold!

Once you get through the boring half, when she goes back in time, shit really does go down. You get jump scares, but also a lot of mystery. It's a "I wonder what's going to happen next" type of series. And if you're really into historical, fantasy fiction, then the book is a must, otherwise, if you're too lazy then watch the TV show like me.

So far it's a 7/10 - enough for me to watch the next episode.
