Southpaw
Southpaw is a classic journey to redemption movie. Billy "The Great" Hope (Jake Gyllenhaal), the reigning junior middleweight boxing champion, has an impressive career, a loving wife and daughter, and a lavish lifestyle. However, when tragedy strikes, Billy hits rock bottom, losing his family, his house and his manager. He soon finds an unlikely savior in Tick Willis (Forest Whitaker), a former fighter who trains the city's toughest amateur boxers. With his future on the line, Hope fights to reclaim the trust of those he loves the most.
When you have Jake Gyllenhaal starring in a movie, seldom is likely to go wrong. I stick by this statement having watched his new film Southpaw. He created something phenomenal in Billy Hope and he represented the good and the bad of his character. How Jake manage to go from luxury and style, to hitting rock bottom, to redeeming himself in 2 hours is beyond me. At the center of this story, is a father-daughter relationship which Billy fights for with his life. Whatever remains of his shattered life, he opts to bring the pieces back together. Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson's character is Billy's manager and I was surprised to see that 50 Cent can kind of act. His character, Jordan was the manager to Billy's opponent also. Boxing is a sport that I don't get into, either it's too long or it just doesn't interest me. But for some reason, boxing movies like Rocky and Ali really grips me, and the story revolves around boxing. Southpaw has done just the same and has had a major effect on me. This is a movie that I know I will watch again in the near future.
IMDB: 7.8
